Acne is generally a problem everyone faces at some point, at ANUU Clinic we can offer a fantastic treatment which is effective at calming the overactive oil glands (this is the cause of the acne) and removing any bacterial infections, particularly when used with our specialist skin care regimes.
What is it?
There are three major contributors to acne:
- Sebum (oil) production
- Bacteria
- Shedding of dead skin cells
The sebaceous glands, also known as oil glands, are constantly monitoring and producing the oil that lubricates our skin and hair. These glands are connected to our hair follicles. The glands produce the sebum, and then the sebum usually travels up the hair shaft and to the skin. Acne occurs when the other contributors, dead skin cells and bacteria, are also present.
Our skin is always shedding dead skin cells to allow for re-growing skin. Some of these dead cells remain attached to the new skin, so when the oil travels up the hair shaft and mix with the dead skin cells, a plug is created. This is the start of a blackhead or whitehead. When certain types of bacteria are present, the acne may escalate into a more severe form.
Additional factors, such as hormones and hereditary characteristics, as well as medications can also aggravate or increase the breakouts.

Procedure
How it works
ANUU Clinic uses a Intense Pulses Light (IPL) system, which releases yellow and red light in a series of short pulses. The yellow light destroys the bacteria that live in the skin while the red light directly targets the overactive glands that can cause the outbreak.
The targeted heating deep in the skin causes shrinkage of the inflamed glands and helps to prevent over production of excess sebum. So you see the skin begin to clear and the condition improve.
The process
A typical treatment may last about 45 minutes to complete, however this will vary depending on the severity of the Acne.
Firstly a cooling gel will be applied on the affected area to be treated, this will help to make it more comfortable and also reduce the effects of the treatment once it has been completed.
The IPL Lamp is then positioned over the surface of the skin; the lamp will send the light pulses to the skin for the desired time frame. The light energy is absorbed by the skin and heats it up, creating a sharp pinprick sensation.
Once the treatment is completed a redness and slight warming sensation would be expected and this is a normal reaction. Further cooling may be necessary to easy the symptoms, but they will cease quickly.
ANUU Clinic recommends that you use a sun-cream post treatment.
It is likely you will need to comeback to ANUU Clinic for occasional maintenance treatments to control the likelihood of future outbreaks
Side effects
The treated area can become quite red after treatment but usually disappear within a couple of hours. Most people experience no side effects. Very rarely the skin may become lighter or darker or a small blister may form.
